New business streams

The client saw the opportunity to develop a new business service in response to widespread media coverage of a public health issue, but lacked the technical resources to develop and specify the service. A full package was agreed with the client, including investigating the most effective way to deliver the service, specifying the correct materials and methods, writing the detailed service procedures (including all H&S issues), training staff, supporting the market launch and giving presentations to conferences &media. This service is now a core business stream for the client.

Business stream upgrades, with re-branding

Although successful, in the longer term the client's business faced becoming a commodity service with no unique features. After discussions with the client, a research programme was set up to investigate additional, added-value features that could be incorporated into the service offer. This programme delivered a number of service benefits, many of which were of media interest, creating valuable PR. The client included these benefits in their marketing strategy, eventually leading to re-branding of the entire service with a unique proposition.

Business stream upgrades, with environmental product opportunities

To maintain their leading market position, the client wished to upgrade their service provision by using products with a much lower environmental impact than the aggressive chemicals they were used to using. Instructions were received to carry out a full review of the product range and identify new opportunities. Management support for the subsequent new product development programme was provided, involving overview of laboratory studies and sub-contractor activities. Subsequently, the client was able to re-position themselves in the market place with an entirely new product range backed by environmental awards and patented IPR.

Technical due diligence for mergers and acquisitions

The client operated a waste management business in the UK, and wished to acquire similar businesses overseas. Having identified target companies, the client issued instructions for full technical and compliance due diligence investigations. The operating premises of the target companies were visited and the working procedures, equipment, training and staff capability assessed. Local legally required operating permits and certification were identified. As a result of this input, the client was confidently able to continue acquisition of selected target companies, while others were dropped.

Business support for the pest management industry

The client had been awarded a government contract for the provision of pest management services over 100,000 hectares of rice in Madagascar. The contract required the delivery of a 20% yield increase. Instructions were received to set up the technical programme to achieve this target, but with only a two month lead time. In this time a full research and technical support programme was put in place, including appointment of ex-pat and local field staff, equipment purchase, communication with government contract managers and logistics. Contract performance was monitored throughout the growing season, at the end of which a 28% yield increase was achieved.

Environmental risk management, with new product opportunity

The client's operational site in Germany faced imminent shut down due to non-compliance with local government enforcement notices regarding chemical waste discharges to sewer. Following a site visit, an alternative effluent waste treatment process was specified and interim equipment quickly installed. Operational procedures were written and staff trained. The new process specification and operation were approved by the authorities, and business continuity maintained using a low environmental impact process.

Environmental risk management

The client was concerned about the possible environmental risks associated with a factory site they operated in the North of England. Instructions were received to conduct a full environmental audit of the site operations and operational procedures to identify and prioritise the risks, and ensure compliance with all legislative requirements. During the course of an intensive, structured site investigation, 19 areas of concern were identified and a priority action programme of remedial work put to the client for implementation. The client appointed an environmental manager to take the programme forward.
